For the past two days, I have been running little errands around town, having lunch or dinner with friends, and deciding what entertainment I should bring.
You know the old question, "What should you bring on a remote island?"
That question has been dominating my thoughts these past two days.
Internet is very expensive and slow there.
Mail only comes twice a week.
There is one library and one bookstore in American Samoa, but I've been told there is not much selection.
I will be isolated from the rest of the world, but also cut off from the rest of cyberspace in way as I will not have the same access to information as I enjoy now.
But I acknowledge my situation is not so dire as the old question poses.
I can have cable or internet. Netflix is available. An attorney recommended getting a Kindle.
On one hand, I don't think I will be spending much time on the couch (that is my hope). And it is very expensive!
Like $75 for dial-up. Yes, you read that right. DIAL-UP.
Here is an informative article about the state of the internet and information technology in American Samoa.
BUT
on the other hand, I NEED to watch the last season of Breaking Bad...I NEED to finish Mad Men...I am ADDICTED to The Walking Dead.
Yes, I know. If this is the greatest challenge I am facing, my life is sooooooooooooooo hard.
:)
I have also been looking at my books and DVDs, and thinking about which ones will I want to read or watch when I am sick, tired, homesick, etc.
After much debate, I picked three books: Bossypants; Ender's Game, and Anne of Green Gables. And for my DVDs, I will bring Pride and Prejudice, Firefly, Amelie, and Flight of the Conchords.
I will weigh my bag again tomorrow, and see if I can slip in a few more DVDs...like Rome, The Wire, or Battlestar Galactica.
Spending tomorrow in SF - taking in as much of that Bay Area breeze as I can!
Thanks! I wish I could take credit for the pictures.
ReplyDeleteHopefully when the weather clears up I can take a walking tour of the island and really add my own.
