Last year I came across a post at my law school, advertising about the possibility of working for the Attorney General's Office in American Samoa. I was looking for local opportunities, but the ad caught my eye.
I found myself returning to it every day and reading it over and over. I started to fantasize about practicing law and living there, and to feed my fantasies, I started to research and devour any news, blog, or journal on American Samoa.
This fantasy nagged at me for a long time until I decided - "Just apply!" 11 months - 2 interviews, and tons of emails later, my fantasy is now a reality, and I will be leaving for Pago Pago, American Samoa in 10 days!
I am excited! I am terrified! Above all, I am ready!
I actually accepted the position a few months ago. But with a new administration in power, it took some time for my offer to progress through the proper channels and receive approval. During that time, I read the Samoa News every day. I feel like I read every academic article on the legal system in American Samoa. I also perused every blog I could find, and managed to talk to a few former Assistant Attorney Generals too. There is only one movie about Samoan culture on Netflix, and yup, I watched it. Do I feel like an expert? Hell no! But I feel better prepared than the first time I lived abroad.
The first time I lived in the Middle East. On a whim, I spent my senior year as a study abroad student, and loved it so much, I decided to stay. I had no clue where I would live or how I support myself. I just felt something would happen as any invincible 21 year old believes. Fortunately, a lot a great things happened, and I had another memorable year there before coming back home.
Now with law school behind me and a few years under my belt - I find myself yearning for another adventure.
So this will my second time living abroad, and every molecule in my body is break dancing! Hence, the title of my blog: Livin' Abroad 2: Samoan Boogaloo.
Doesn't sound even remotely familiar? Then you my friend have been deprived.
Bask in its glory!
Isn't it glorious? Scratch that, totally radical?
10 days to go.
Let the packin' and breakin' begin!
